Why, why Alaska?

This is a question we have been asked so often over the past 22 years.

It was a difficult decision to pack up and leave New Hampshire. We were so caught up in preparing to move to Alaska that we didn’t have time to think about what we were leaving behind. But once we were on the road for several days, the fear and uncertainty began.

Each year they travel around the country meeting new people along the way and always trying to answer the question:  “Why, Why Alaska?"

Was moving away from our family and friends a mistake? Will we adjust to living without running water, electricity or phone and using an outhouse? What about all the wild bears and moose? We decided not to think about what was in the future but to concentrate on our safe arrival. Alaska was a long way off!

Florine Hirsch grew up as a tomboy in the small town of Pelham NH where she met and married her longtime sweetheart Bob over 50 years ago. Together they raised 5 children while working a small farm and running a lumber business. Today, their extended family includes 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson as well as their many family and friends across the country.

Once their children were married and starting families of their own, Bob and Florine decided it was their time for an adventure. And what an adventure it turned out to be!

Bob and Florine moved to Alaska in 1984, starting out in an old log cabin in Sourdough with no modern conveniences. Florine recorded their early adventures by writing a weekly series in a local newspaper as a way to share in their adventures with family and friends back home. This eventually led to a televised series named “Alaska Adventures” and “On the Road again with the Hirsch’s” on a local cable channel.
